Famous Dave Anderson is the founder of Famous Dave’s BBQ located all across the country.
It started in a little town in Hayward Wisconsin and it quickly become a sensation with people driving hundreds of miles to taste his BBQ.
I first tried Famous Dave’s BBQ over 15 years ago in Minneapolis, MN (I’m a huge BBQ fan).
So, I was in Minnesota visiting my family a couple weeks ago for the holidays and decided to spend a day coaching Dave and his team on how to build a web TV show.
Below is the short episode we made just for you on how to make Famous Dave’s Wild Rice Soup.
Total equipment cost: 2 Kodak Zi8 cameras, approx $300.
Total time invested: Just over 2 hours filming and 2 hours to edit.
This is a great example of how anyone can inexpensively…
- build a relationship
- create a bond
- make excellent content with simple equipment that can generate tens or thousands of dollars for you!
And you can turn any skill you have into a program that’s fun, informative and profitable. If you want, check out Famous Dave’s website.

What editing software did you use? Great video. Maybe use boom mics next time.
We use Final Cut Pro for the Mac, but Sony Vegas is a really good video editing software for the PC.
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:00 pm
The video quality is amazing, I can’t believe the low cost of production.
Thanks, Mike
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:07 pm

January 22nd, 2010 at 5:09 pm

January 22nd, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Oh my that looks so yummy, I will definitely be making this soup very soon.
I am so envious of Dave’s library, WOW!! I aqm always writing notes and throwing them away, now I know what to do with them, thanks.
Also this video gave me a TON of great ideas,
Thanks a bunch!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Thanks, Mike. Great video. All your videos are great creatively and technically. They tell a tight story.
Famous Dave is famous for a reason. Wow, I didn’t expect to receive a powerful business lesson in addition to a wonderful recipe.
Dave succeeds BECAUSE he earns success.
Wow, what a library.
Maybe a wake-up call to all the people jumping on the IM bandwagon believing they can spit out a bunch of videos and cash checks all day.
Is it fair to say ALL of us have to pay our dues before we can cash checks…even if we’re blessed with great tools like Traffic Geyser?
Thanks, Mike. More of a video than I expected.

Famous Dave’s is our favorite spot to eat in MN. I’ve seen Dave speak at an event and am impressed with the delivery of his business ideas too. What a well rounded expert!
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Hey Dave!
You certainly are one-of-a-kind
Great lessons to be learned here…
wow! I am truly amazed at the collection you have there…
And would love to try that wild rice chicken soup recipe…
thanks my friend…
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Awesome video! Amazing Library! and a terrific soup too! And despite all the veggies, my kids loved it too!
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:33 pm
This is so good, Mike, I think you are doing a wonderful job. I am anxious to get started in your methods but I have just started in the internet business and having difficulty getting the funds together to purchase your system. I a a member of One Coach and missed the offer that you gave to John Assaraf. I also get Bob Procter’s daily insight and saw the offer that you made his friends. I am hoping to do this very soon and would like you to give me a good offer if at all possible so that I can get started. My very best wishes to Dave.
Kindest regards
Walter.
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Very well done. This concept will fly
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Wow, I am hungry now and wanting to make that soup at home too. Where can I get a recipe and more importantly, I’d love to know about the cameras used, the photoediting applications and how you put this together!
Thank YOU!

January 22nd, 2010 at 5:44 pm
this video looks awesome. I currently have the Zi8 and a wireless microphone system from radio shack and they both work great. Did you guys use the lighting in the kitchen?
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Hi Mike, thanks that was a GREAT video. Great idea about the cooking thing. I see that this could work with any niche or business out there. Also I love BBQ, it’s the best.
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:57 pm
Dave not only gave out a killer soup recipe.. he gave out the recipe to success.
Great video Mike.

Dave You Are Awesome!
This was such an enjoyable video to watch and you are so real. I could almost taste the soup. I will definitely be searching the web to see everywhere your restaurants are. You should also write a personal development book.
Thanks Mike for getting Dave to make this video.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:08 pm
Great video. I love your library and how you have it organized. I thought I had a lot of books until I saw yours. Looking forward to trying your soup.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Your video is a taste of home. Living in South America I don’t get back to Minnesota often enough. The most interesting part for me is I can buy real Minnesota harvested by hand wild rice here in the stores. I will make some of Dave’s soup this next week. I do not miss the snow.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:15 pm
Awesome! We are so excellent bbq cookers here in Texas,as well! Once I move back to Carlsbad,Ca I’ll bring u some Texas BBQ =-)
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:19 pm
Excellent! Very encouraging and inspiring. Worth watching more than once! Love the suggestion to get a “Recipe for Success” in life. Thanks!
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:22 pm
Mike,
It’s not surprise Famous Dave is as successful as it is. I mean WOW, that dude’s book collection trumps any collection I have ever seen.
It’s nice to see the guy’s that make it happen, behind the scenes in their own element.
Thanks for sharing.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:26 pm
This is great! It does lack the luster of a professionally produced video, but still very informative.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Awesome! We are some excellent bbq cookers here in Texas,as well! Once I move back to Carlsbad,Ca I’ll bring u some Texas BBQ =-)
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:37 pm
Outstanding! Everything, the message, the performer, and the recipe. Thanks, Mike, for introducing Dave to us deprived (Deprived because neither he or his BBQ houses are in our area).
After seeing Dave’s library I’m motivated to build mine up again.
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Dave is a very devoted individual making him super
successful. By keeping on top of things he remains
very competitive. Enjoyed the presentation.
Thanks
Don

Yummy! I am hungry now. It is so incredible to watch the success of Traffic Geyser over the last few years! Way to go Mike…well deserved!

January 22nd, 2010 at 7:03 pm
This was not only a great idea but a real treat on so many levels. Having spent 11 years in the food service industry from mom and pop to Beverly Hills managing, cooking and cleaning before I moved into sales. I can totally agree it is all in the details. That applies to all professions, industries and life. Good to have a refresher. Love that library. Thank you so much for the wake up call. Michael
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Thank you for the video, Mike. I am trying to do videos to promote our BBQ equipment website, and I appreciate all the help I can get. I really struggle with getting good background music, but I like the one you chose for this soup recipe. Can you PLEASE tell me where I can find more like it?
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Hmmmm….. I’m hungry. Wonderful video. The best is good enough for me.
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:34 pm
I love that you are sharing this Mike. There is no excuse with todays easy applications and low cost methods for making money. Take ANY skill and turn it into income with a little effort. Use tools like Traffic Geyser, blogs, youtube…and make no excuses.
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm
great video thanks for sharing…
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm
Hey Mike ~ great job. I love Famous Dave’s too. I’m from St. Paul Minnesota and I’ve been going to Dave’s BBQ for years. Your videos are a lot of fun.
Kirk
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:48 pm
The Zi8 camera has an external audio input so you can get vastly better audio by employing 2 wireless mics, a small mixer to combine the signals and then feeding a mixed single channel of audio into the Zi8 through a small 1/8 audio input jack.
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Awesome….I watched it three times
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:04 pm
This is awesome. I am in the fitness field and have lost a ton of weight and now I am helping others do the same. It was on my mind to do recipes from different workout programs This video just put my thoughts into action. Did I mention I love Famous Dave’s
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Great content Dave and Mike I love Famous BBQ. Keep up good work TG(4 LIFE)…
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:17 pm
Great video, Mike! It was exciting to see Famous Dave. He’s one of my heroes. I’ve enjoyed Famous Dave’s BBQ in several states and even made a pilgrimage to Hayward, WI to eat at the original. I keep looking, but I haven’t found better BBQ anywhere.
Thanks for the visit with Dave. Is he going to continue making cooking/philosophy videos?
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Very impressive quality with inexpensive equipment. Got hungry for some of that soup from just watching. Maybe Jorge Cruise would let me have this stuff on my day off from my new way of eating.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:22 pm
Hi Mike;
awesome video, I’ve never personally met Dave what a
motivator he is! I’ll definately try this chicken & rice
recipe this weekend.
Thanks so much Sincerely;
Daryl
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:46 pm
It was great to watch this video. I liked all the steps Dave took in making his soup. I bet it was delicious. I have never had a soup with half and half and whipping cream. I bet it was really rich tasting.
Is that his house, too?
It is always fun to work for someone who is positive and motivational like that. It tends to be catching.
Thanks for sharing.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Wow thanks a lot for the video. I’m sure gonna try this and I love the comment on continuously learning and paying attention to detail. I know think a lot of people realize that success requires work and constantly educating yourself. Everyone wants a quick and easy.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Not bad, but waaayyyyy to long, this is longer than most 30 minute shows on television.
You guys need to watch Sam the Cooking Guy and learn. And Gary Vaynerchuck is great, this is not even close to how good the content is on his websites, even if he does ramble he is still FUN to watch.
Get somebody in the kitchen that is exciting and/or engaging to watch. I love Dave, but he does not seem happy to be there. SMILE!!! And don’t give a sales pitch!
We know that you are successful, we see your restaurants, stop talking about it.
The most important advice I would give, teach me something about BBQ and tell me funny stories from your days in the pit and road travels. People want to know about you and feel like they could be your friend.
Good concept though!
January 22nd, 2010 at 10:01 pm

There is no doubt that the Internet is replacing the TV, what was only an idea, is now beciming strong extremely fast, now I understand the words: “The one who doesn’t have his bussines thru internet, will be stock in another era; the industrial era”. Today it is a reality to work from home, and do what we like. To enjoy of an activity which you can earn a profit from, is no longer just a simple joy, it is a dream come true… Enjoying the life trhu internet, doing what u like the most: Constructing Marqueting Networks…

That recipie looks fantastic! Guess I need to stop being camera shy and get to the video marketing stage! Thanks!
January 22nd, 2010 at 10:26 pm
I absolutely loved this video. It’s down home, interesting, inspirational, and boy would I love to have some of that soup and explore that library! My philosophies are the same as Dave’s when it comes to learning, making sure you are the best at what you do, and having smart, positive, successful people as coaches and friends. Next time I travel, I’m going to go to one of Dave’s restaurants and have some of that BBQ too!
January 22nd, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Thank you you mike for introducing me to Famous Dave and his many insights to success.
January 23rd, 2010 at 2:55 am
I loved it! But, I just needed to taste the soup! And I like what Famous D. said about what to put into your mind, for success and positive mental programming. I think he is a very cool dude.
January 23rd, 2010 at 4:30 am
This was fantastic! Can’t wait to try out that soup recipe!
January 23rd, 2010 at 5:02 am
Mike,
That was a fantastic example of what’s possible. Seeing a brief snapshot of Dave and some of his accomplishments is inspiring and from a product creation standpoint,it’s a great template of creating for how to create a valuable offering.
I’m gonna have to run and get Dave’s book. It’s refreshing to be introduced to people who are living life on all burners!
Thanks for another great vid.
Alex. T.
January 23rd, 2010 at 5:13 am
This is a really cool video Mike… Ha I love it.
January 23rd, 2010 at 5:52 am
Great. Many thanks. Great recipe and an inspirational personality. And it sells the concept of using video.Vic
January 23rd, 2010 at 6:28 am
Thank you Dave & Mike for delivering an unexpected twist to the traffic geyser blog. Dave’s message is poignant. !. Pay attention to the details. 2. Do not participate in the economy instead make your own economy. 3. Focus on personal research & development. 4. Set out to learn something new each day. 5. Have a passion for what you do. I loved seeing the garage full of information. What was especially powerful was witnessing the detail that Dave spent in picking out music for his restaurants by going through his 4,000 CDs to perfect the ‘customer experience’.
January 23rd, 2010 at 9:06 am
good job.
January 23rd, 2010 at 10:23 am
Sorry to ruin the fun – but that recipe won’t become my favorite because I’m a raw foodist.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Mike,
this is just an exceptional video. thx.
Edwin
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:37 pm
Great video!
Mike I am also a huge Famous Dave fan here in Georgia. I had no clue he was so into the “motivation” stuff as well.
I now like him even more.
Thanks for sharing Mike. I gotta go make a video!
Dave
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Excellent video guys. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, Mike and the whole TG support team rock!
I am now ranking on the first page for search terms in my niche that absolutely blow me away! I’m talking about being in terms that there over 500,00 pages competing. In fact, I have some that are ranking for terms that are over a million!!
The TG system is the biggest “No-Brainer-Gotta-Have-It” on the web! Hands down.
The tutorials alone are worth thousands of dollars! Using them has increased my online guitar course video quality ten fold!
There’s a huge difference between my landing page video and the actual course video’s thanks to Mike.
I leave the old video up just because it converts so well.
Thanks for everything Mike. I’m up for a vide testimonial when you are – anytime!
I’m flat out sold!

Great video. What are you using to edit?
Hello Llion,
We use Final Cut Pro (for Mac) to edit all of our videos but I also recommend Sony Vegas (for PC). Both are really good video editing programs and can do everything that you see in our videos. You could also use the free programs that come on your computer, Windows Movie Maker (PC) or iMovie (Mac) but they are not as good.
Mike
January 23rd, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Mike,
What video editing software do you use/recommend? I have the Kodak Zi8.
Tom
Hello Tom,
If you have a PC then I recommend Sony Vegas, and if you have a Mac I would recommend Final Cut Pro. However, both types of computer come with a basic video editing software that you can use, Windows Movie Maker for PC and iMovie for Mac.

Wow, Great video! What a delight to see the program in action and kind of rub shoulders with a great entrepreneur/philosopher like Famous Dave. Nice demonstration. Thank you!
January 23rd, 2010 at 7:21 pm
Delicious. Entertaining. Congratulations. Fabulous house and kitchen. I might mosaic his recipes, one a month! It’s great to be addicted to something great and good for you! I must go and fire up our Barbie! It’s nearly Australia Day! Hugs and cheers from DownUnder!
January 23rd, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Great job guy’s – lessons about cooking the soup just a small part of what I received from the piece. Thanks!
January 23rd, 2010 at 8:03 pm
Dave is a good guy and great marketer but won’t be around much longer since he obviously believes Lipitor will overcome all those saturated fats we all love so much.
January 23rd, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Hey…this is a great idea and Dave is a serious student of success and the only thing I would have added was Mike and Dave sucking down some of that “Wild Rice Soup” because I sure wanted some….
….great show and Dave is a wonderful personality…keep it up!
January 23rd, 2010 at 8:57 pm
This was great! I’m living in Seattle now but I’m from Minnesota and I LOVE wild rice soup but I can’t find it out here. I can finally use my Minnesota wild rice to make a great soup. I also agree with Dave about his philosphy for life and I’m really thankful that he shared that with us. I’m all about designing a life based on your passions and values. Thanks
January 23rd, 2010 at 9:32 pm
Awesome video Mike. My Kodac Zi8 is due here in the next day or two. I can’t wait to do something like this with my newest client who has a Italian Restaurant and Pizza Place. We shot some fun things for him and are doing a give away of a large pizza each week. We are planning a trip to the Italian Market with him in Philadelphia so his customers can see where he gets all his food and how he picks it out. We recently did a blooper video that everyone loves!(on the winners page on his site) I am going to show him this video you did with Famous Dave cause I really want him to do something similar.
Thanks to TG I now have him on page one of Google. He started on page 10 and I have a free place to eat and bring future clients anytime I want for free. We are also building a local client list with our give away each week and the Squeeze page we made with Traffic Geyser. We are going to use it to reduce his advertising cost and do cross promotions with other local businesses. Thanks for all the great training.
January 23rd, 2010 at 9:54 pm
This gives me great encouragement as look forward to working with local businesses. I guess it’s a little cheaper than what I thought and you say two hours editing; that’s great! Good news. I like the Indian rice tip. I’m soooo hungry.
January 24th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Thanks Dave and Mike–
You are making me hungry! I thought I made a great chicken rice soup, but this really has it beat. I look forward to trying the soup with real wild rice (yes, I know what that is because I am also a native Minnesotan), using a roux, and using almonds. What great ideas!
Liz Nichols
PS– Would love to see a Famous Daves in Iowa City.
January 24th, 2010 at 1:53 am
I purchased this video camera and love it. How do you do all the editing and add the music?
I’m still learning so any info is much appreciated…
Thank you
Hello Eldridge,

January 24th, 2010 at 3:32 am
thanks you for give me the video
January 24th, 2010 at 4:35 am
No Wonder I don’t cook! It takes so much details!
Now he makes it look so easy
And yet so much fun!
(of course practice makes perfect) But any ways Thanks Mr Koenings for the hint about how to for the video.
I’ll save the recipe for my wife, maybe I get lucky and she’ll make soup for me. And later on I buy the book with the recipes. Any ways thanks again. felipereal
January 24th, 2010 at 5:52 am
Very Inspiring, but….HE’S RIGHT! The soup WILL kill you! 2 cups of “half and half”, and a pint of whipping cream??! We will die before our time, but we’ll die very inspired, Dave! (LOL!)
January 24th, 2010 at 10:43 am
As a guy who loves cooking and entrepreneurial efforts, I must say that I really enjoyed this video. I think both of you guys did a great job… and I hope to see it on iTunes to subscribe to!

I learn something new everyday.
Thanks for changing your set. The old one was really getting boring!
If you were shooting that video in the city where I live you would need hundreds of extra dollars of expenses for permits to do the shooting.
I’m sure that your readers would be interested in your comments about permits!
January 24th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Hi Dave, thanks for the receipe and the tips. This is an awesome video, very inspiring! I will take MORE action to read, learn new skills and promote my business in music education. thanks! Glory St. Germain p.s. you need to come to Winnipeg, Canada
January 24th, 2010 at 11:07 pm
My mouth is watering! Great recipe, great bonding, great offhanded (cool guy) promotion interlaced. Where can I get that REAL wild rice?
January 25th, 2010 at 1:37 am

January 25th, 2010 at 2:29 am
What a genuinely nice guy! That was an awesome video, Mike. Thank you for sharing.
January 25th, 2010 at 4:22 am
I loved this video. What a cool guy Dave is. he has amazing passion. I hungry!
January 25th, 2010 at 4:47 am
how do you upload a movie that is more than 10 minutes long? where do you host it?
You can host it on your own Amazon S3 server and create a video player in TG.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:22 am
Hey Mike,
Thanks for sharing. Thanks to your video I am now going to buy some shares of Famous Dave’s Stock. Don’t figure I can go wrong investing in a person who values success principal like Dave does.
Also wanted to share that we have started doing the same thing for a client. We just began the Disc-It Cooking show and it is going very well. Here is the link for others to see another cooking show and how we are shooting it.

Thanks for all you do!

Thank you very much for sharing this video. One is that I am a brand advocate of Famous Dave’s. We have one here in Fort Collins Colorado and our experience was super. Watching Famous Dave here really reflects the brand experience of his business all the way to the Colorado marketing guy Dallas who tweets about Famous Dave’s @FamousDavesCO.
Also, I am very excited about this video was shot with the Zi8. I have one Zi8 and I love it. Did you just use the external mic on the camera?
What software did you edit this with? I know that TG uses many different types software, I’m just Curious. I have been doing mos of my stuff in ScreenFlow.
Thank you again for sharing!
-Rob Smith
January 25th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Good stuff. Hard to believe that’s a Zi8 camera. Did you use an external mic – and if so, what brand/model/etc? Is it a shotgun, lav or stick mic or wireless? Thanks Joe
January 25th, 2010 at 6:54 pm
Love these videos where you really get to ‘meet’ the person & see what they’re all about. Man, I’m hungry now!

Great video, I’m going to try out Famous Dave’s. I love his enthusiasm. The video looks a little pixely (If That’s a word). I finally got my own amazonS3 account because my
TG premium player just made the the video and especially text look too pixely. Anyway thank for the video!

Ok,I just had a chance to watch you and Dave in action and the accomplishment is that toward the end I was totally engrossed in the final product.Good Job.My heart just seized with all the butter.Still,Dave,Keep going. The Zi8s are just what you want to use.Cool Beans.

Very Good example with Dave. Nice looking image, though I am wondering if there is an optional miking rig that would make your wide shot audio sound better than the internal mike (a bit echoie), without adding much expense.
Haven’t gotten mail from you in a while, probably because I didn’t get into any products, but that makes perfect sense. Still trying to figure out what I can produce for net income.
Thanks for this,
Steve

Great video Mike, thank you! It is quite obvious that Famous Dave has a passion for what he does and it comes as no surprise that he has achieved much success.

I love the video. Famous Dave just emphasized on what I also believe, we should always be learning something and always in a positive attitude… and enjoy life and our successes.
Thanks for the recipe. Looks fantastic!

Mike great video. Thanks for sharing this with us. What a background Dave developed. A real American hero. Enjoyed very much. My biggest challenge is starting over. Run myself into the ground financially. SO must build with very little $$. That is my biggest challenge. Developing something with no cash flow.

Very interesting recipe, it looks delicious. Nice video production but I could have done without the player piano, it was a little distracting.
